The future of our healthcare system

Information technology is changing healthcare in numerous wide-ranging aspects, including significantly improving the overall quality of patient care and therefore, helping to reduce limitations in people’s daily lives. external page"The Digital Pill: What Everyone Should Know about the Future of Our Healthcare System" is a guest lecture by Prof. Elgar Fleisch, principal investigator of the Mobile Health Interventions module at the Future Health Technologies (FHT) programme. Prof. Fleisch will discuss how digital technologies can combat chronic diseases including diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular, respiratory and neurodegenerative diseases as well as mental disorders.

Chronic diseases touch every family, generate infinite suffering and cause the lion’s share of every countries’ healthcare spending across the world. Prof. Fleisch will report pioneering cases from large and small technology, insurance, and pharmaceutical companies as well as healthcare providers of all sorts across the globe.

He will bring forward patterns and cornerstones of an affordable and patient-centric digital healthcare – knowledge that is essential for anyone working in, engaged with or interested in understanding the future of healthcare.

About the speaker

Prof. Elgar Fleisch is Professor of Information and Technology Management at ETH Zurich and the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and Director of the Institute of Technology Management. He graduated from the HTL Bregenz in mechanical engineering, then studied business informatics in Vienna and completed his doctoral thesis in the field of artificial intelligence. After his habilitation on the subject of “Network enterprises and various intermediate stations” he was appointed to the HSG in 2002 and additionally to the ETH in 2004.

His research interests focus on the current fusion of the physical and digital world into an Internet of Things. With his transdisciplinary team, his goal is to understand this fusion in the dimensions of technology, applications and social implications and, based on this, to develop new technologies and applications for the benefit of the economy and society.

Prof. Fleisch is also co-founder of several ETH and HSG spin-off companies and a member of various academic steering committees and supervisory boards. He is also an advisory board member of the Center for Digital Health Interventions.
