Dr Rita Cheng wins Best Research award at rehabilitation medicine symposium

Dr Rita Cheng of FHT and her co-researchers were awarded the Best Research prize in the symposium’s poster contest for novel interventions for moderately impaired chronic stroke patients

Stroke rehabiliation

Dr Rita Cheng, researcher of the Future Health Technologies (FHT) programme, together with Prof. Nicole Wenderoth, Dr Xue Zhang from ETH Zurich and their co-researchers, were awarded the Best Research Award at a poster contest in an American Congress of Rehabilitative Medicine (ACRM) Symposium on 29 September 2021.

Dr Cheng and her team were awarded for their work on novel interventions on post-stroke upper limb rehabilitation. By applying a method called bihemispheric transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) with a muscle-computer interface, her team could improve motion impairments in chronic stroke patients. This method may be implemented in both home and clinical settings.

An extension of this study, without the use of tDCS, is currently a subject of research in FHT’s Connected Rehabilitation Technology and Assistive Devices module.

The team’s research was presented at an ACRM event titled, “A symposium of research by National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) Fellows - Part 1 & 2”. She was previously awarded an Integrative Rehabilitation Research Mentoring & Career Development Fellowship by ACRM for her research on rehabilitation medicine.
